Checking the vitals with district's CTE health offerings

Students at Boring Middle School (BMS) put their skills to the test this week when they faced off against a pulse oximeter to see if they could accurately assess someone's heart rate manually. It was part of the school's Intro to First Aid class, available for the first time this year thanks to the addition of new CTE classrooms at both BMS and Cedar Ridge Middle School, that also teaches skills from checking lung auscultations and blood pressure to performing CPR and using an AED. 
The classes at the middle schools offer a way for students to get an early start on the Health Science track at Sandy High School (SHS), where students can take a range of classes, including First Aid, Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Medicine and Medical Terminology. The First Aid classes at both the middle schools and high school also offer students the option to obtain a two-year certification in Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.
SHS has a total of eight different CTE programs comprised of 57 courses.
